Designing learning that people actually use.

I'm Roger Batchelor — university educator, open-textbook author and learning designer. I build courses, simulations and AI-informed tools that help learners move from knowing to doing.

About me

Where academic depth meets practical design.

Good learning design doesn't ask "what content goes online?" It asks "what should learners be able to do?"

I teach at Trent University, including in the Master of Management program, across entrepreneurship, business ethics, strategic management and human resources, and I've developed and delivered courses in asynchronous, blended and in-person formats across Moodle, Canvas, D2L Brightspace and Blackboard.

Alongside teaching, I write open textbooks, design decision-based simulations and build the digital tools that hold a course together. I founded ClasserlyHied to make that work freely available to learners and instructors everywhere.

My research looks at how artificial intelligence can strengthen — rather than undermine — authentic assessment and academic integrity.

What I do

One connected practice, six ways in.

🎓

University teaching

Undergraduate and Master of Management courses at Trent University in business, law, ethics, strategy and HR — online, blended and face-to-face.

📘

Open textbooks

Pressbooks OER with cases, pretests, reflections, videos and slides built in.

🧭

Simulations

Branching, decision-based scenarios where learners lead — and live with the consequences.

⚡

Kahoot! reviews

154 published games turning retrieval practice into something students look forward to.

🛠️

Instructional design

Curriculum maps, assessments, LMS builds and complete course development for institutions.

🤖

AI in education

Research and tools that use AI to support authentic, integrity-preserving assessment.

Education

A lifelong learner, on purpose.

Currently completing two graduate programs at once — one in how people learn, one in how machines do.

Research

AI that protects authentic learning.

As generative AI changes how students produce work, I study how assessment can stay meaningful — and how AI itself can help instructors see genuine understanding.

My current project evaluates the Presentation Authenticity Check against trained human raters to see how well it detects scripted delivery in recorded student presentations.

  • Designing online assessments that resist AI misuse
  • AI-assisted evaluation of recorded presentations
  • Open educational resources & simulation-based learning
  • Game-based retrieval practice in higher education
  • Textbook in progress: Artificial Intelligence and Education — Foundations, Practice, and Critical Perspectives

Sailor, traveller, curious by default.

Away from the classroom you'll find me on the water or somewhere new — more than 65 countries so far. That global perspective shapes every course I design.

Let's work together
