Profile

Scholarship made practical.

I am Roger Batchelor, a professor, curriculum designer, and doctoral researcher working at the intersection of higher education, generative AI, and authentic learning.

My work draws on experience in education, law, business, organizational development, and human resources. Across each field, the goal remains the same: build learning that is clear, engaging, inclusive, and useful beyond the classroom.

Selected portfolio

Learning experiences built to be used.

Open resources, applied simulations, and multimedia designed for real learners and real decisions.

Current research

Generative AI, assessment, and authentic learning.

How can higher education respond to generative AI without losing what makes learning meaningful?

My doctoral research in Curriculum & Pedagogy at OISE examines how educators are adapting online assessment in response to student use of generative AI. I am especially interested in approaches that move beyond detection and toward authentic, transparent, and educationally defensible assessment.

Beyond the classroom

Life on the water.

Sailing and boating have been part of my life since childhood.

I began sailing at five and owned my first boat at twelve. Today, time on the water remains one of the ways I reconnect with family, curiosity, and the pleasure of learning through doing. My son and I completed a full boat restoration together, and our summer boating trips continue a lifelong tradition of exploration.

Sailing since age five

A lifelong source of challenge, freedom, and perspective.

Restoration & cruising

Hands-on projects and multi-week summer journeys with my son.
